TUI, one of the world’s leading tourism companies with over 60,000 employees, manages ESG data across a complex portfolio spanning an airline, cruise operations, hotels, and tours and activities. Historically reliant on more than 500 Excel files and manual processes, the organization implemented an interim software solution to address data fragmentation challenges. As TUI’s data volumes and business complexity continued to grow, they recognized the need for a more robust system to improve data accuracy, strengthen auditability, and support increasingly demanding reporting timelines. Since implementing Sphera Corporate Sustainability (SCCS) in 2022 and Disclosure Manager for EU CSRD in 2025, TUI has centralized and standardized ESG data collection across ~250 data contributors. The platform enables automated validation, real-time visibility into data collection, and improved transparency and traceability. As a result, TUI has increased confidence in its sustainability reporting, enhanced audit readiness, and improved data collection and management efficiency, while supporting CSRD-aligned disclosures.

Highlights

~250 global data contributors

2 weeks to near-instant reporting

Real-time data collection tracking

Improved audit trail & traceability

Enhanced data validation at source

Challenges

Historically, TUI’s ESG data management relied on manual, Excel-based processes across 250+ contributors and 500+ spreadsheets. This fragmented approach limited standardization and increased effort and complexity in ensuring data quality. Tight reporting windows required simultaneous collection, validation, and reporting, reducing time for quality assurance and limiting audit readiness.

  • Limited visibility into data collection progress
  • Manual validation increased time and resource effort
  • Less structured audit trails and data traceability
  • Tight 3–4 week reporting window under pressure

Solution

To manage growing sustainability and reporting requirements, TUI implemented Sphera Corporate Sustainability (SCCS) with Disclosure Manager to establish a centralized and standardized approach to ESG data management across its global operations.

Moving from disconnected spreadsheets, TUI now collects data through a single, structured solution that accommodates the complexity of its business—from hotels to cruise operations—while enforcing consistent methodologies and data definitions. This standardization ensures that data from 250+ contributors is captured in a uniform, comparable way.

Where data validation was previously manual and time-consuming, Sphera now enables TUI to apply automated controls at the point of entry. Data outside expected ranges is flagged immediately, requiring context before submission, which improves accuracy upstream and reduces the need for extensive downstream review.

TUI has also shifted from manual data chasing to proactive management. Real-time visibility into data collection progress allows the team to identify gaps instantly and focus follow-ups only where needed, rather than relying on broad, manual outreach.

In parallel, reporting processes have been fundamentally streamlined. Data structures, analytics, and reporting outputs can now be prepared in advance, and automated publishing capabilities enable sustainability reports to be generated instantly once data is finalized —eliminating weeks of manual compilation.

Finally, through Disclosure Manager, TUI can align its ESG data to CSRD and other frameworks, combining automated outputs with internal analytics to meet complex regulatory requirements. Supported by implementation expertise and sustainability domain knowledge, TUI has established a scalable, audit-ready foundation for ESG reporting and decision-making.

Results

TUI improved efficiency, accuracy, and governance of sustainability data processes.

Report generation reduced from two weeks of manual effort to near-instant output. Real-time visibility enables targeted engagement, improving productivity.

Automated validation improves data quality at the source, while audit trails enhance transparency and defensibility. TUI now operates with more reliable, standardized, and decision-ready sustainability data.

“While our previous system worked to consolidate fragmented data we needed a system that could manage our growing sustainability and reporting needs. With Sphera, we can validate data at the point of entry and generate reports almost instantly. With real-time visibility into data collection, we can focus our efforts where they’re needed most, improving both efficiency and confidence in our reporting.”
