REMONDIS, a global recycling, service and water company with operations in more than 30 countries and more than 45,000 employees, built a centralized sustainability data infrastructure to enable reporting, improve transparency and manage sustainability topics across a highly decentralized organization.

To address this, REMONDIS implemented SpheraCloud Corporate Sustainability to standardize non-financial data collection at the site level and connect local teams through a shared data foundation. The company has also purchased Sphera Supplier Engagement and is implementing Sphera’s LCA solution to future-proof its sustainability program and support Scope 3 data collection, supplier engagement and customer requests for waste-stream and recycled-material footprint data.

Early testing has reached more than 60% coverage across 900 entities, with the next test run targeting 80% and a later run targeting 100% until end of 2027. The first system-based cycle delivered initial results in about 4 weeks, compared with 2-3 months for prior Excel-based dry runs.

Challenges

REMONDIS’ decentralized structure and high degree of freedom to make entepreuneral decisions demands a consistent, transparent view of sustainability performance across the organization to allow data-driven decision-making at the “location of impact and responsibility”.

Former manual and Excel-based workflows created process inefficiencies, including time-consuming consolidation, inconsistent data, limited quality controls, and a higher risk of errors, double counting, and inconsistent calculations. Previous data collection was time-consuming, produced inconsistent data and lacked the quality controls needed for reliable reporting. Teams had to select emission factors manually, increasing the risk of errors, double counting and inconsistent calculations.

Without a unified system, REMONDIS had limited ability to collect site-level data, track coverage, apply consistent methodologies or prepare data for audit-ready reporting.

  • 900+ entities managing data independently
  • Excel-based workflows and limited controls
  • Inconsistent emission factors and calculations
  • Limited visibility into data coverage and gaps
  • Prior dry runs took 2 to 3 months to analyze and consolidate

Solution

REMONDIS implemented SpheraCloud Corporate Sustainability to establish a standardized, scalable approach to non-financial data collection across its decentralized business structure. The solution enables site-level data collection, consistent methodologies and a shared data foundation that connects entities, business units and headquarters.

The selection process included four vendors and input from REMONDIS’ ESG network across 26 business units. Key criteria included usability, scalability, sustainability expertise and the ability to work with one accountable partner for software, implementation, support and consulting if needed. User feedback was an important factor in the final decision, noting that Sphera was perceived as easier to use and clearer for local teams to independently adopt.

REMONDIS is also expanding its relationship with Sphera across its sustainability initiatives. Supplier Engagement will support future Scope 3 data collection, supplier due diligence and supplier-response sharing across entities, while Sphera life cycle assessment (LCA) capabilities will help build a trusted, transparent data foundation across sustainability programs for reporting, decision-making and customer footprint requests.

Results

Compared with previous Excel-based dry runs, which took two to three months and produced inconsistent results, the first system-based cycle opened data collection for four weeks and delivered consolidated results in under 4 weeks. Users reported a positive experience with the platform’s usability, supporting REMONDIS’ decision to prioritize ease of use for a use for over 600 users across 900 entities.

The work is also improving master-data visibility. For example, REMONDIS identified that site information had previously been spread across five to six systems. Aligning site definitions and hierarchy is expected to improve process efficiency higher 15% for teams using site-level data.

“We need a strong system that lets us collect data, gives entities the freedom to manage sustainability topics on their own and keeps everyone working from the same data foundation.”
