LEONI, a global supplier of cables and wiring systems for the automotive industry, sought to improve the management of sustainability data across its international operations. Increasing customer expectations and evolving regulatory requirements, including the CSRD, highlighted the need for a more efficient and transparent approach. Previously, the company faced challenges related to manual data collection processes, limited transparency across data sources, and highly time-consuming emissions calculations.

By implementing SpheraCloud Corporate Sustainability (SCCS) and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) solutions, LEONI centralized its sustainability data, automated emissions calculations, and improved data traceability. As a result, the company reduced calculation timelines from weeks to near real-time insights, improved data quality, and enabled broader Scope 3 coverage supporting more informed decision-making, readily available data for customer requests and future regulatory readiness.

Highlights

From weeks for carbon emissions calculations work to near-instant

From 1 month per product carbon footprint calculations to only days

Time savings and productivity gained for employees worldwide

Expanded Scope 3 coverage

Improved auditability and traceability of data

Challenges

  • Spreadsheet-based emissions calculations
  • Limited Scope 3 coverage and data granularity
  • Time-intensive data validation and PCF generation cycles
  • Limited end-to-end transparency and traceability across sustainability data workflows
  • Strong reliance of decentralized expert knowledge and manual coordination processes

Prior to the transformation, LEONI managed emissions calculations through a combination of distributed tools and spreadsheet-based workflows. Sustainability data was gathered from multiple operational systems and consolidated largely through manual processes, resulting in extended processing timelines and limited comparability across reporting periods.

For product carbon footprints, complex wiring systems with many components made manual LCA mapping time-consuming and difficult to scale.

Solution

LEONI implemented SpheraCloud Corporate Sustainability (SCCS) alongside its Product Sustainability LCA solution to address both enterprise-wide reporting and product-level carbon footprinting.

The SCCS solution enabled centralized data collection, automated emissions calculations, and direct linkage between reported data and supporting evidence (e.g., invoices). This improved transparency and reduced reliance on manual processes.

Sphera’s flexibility allowed LEONI to go beyond carbon accounting, supporting multiple sustainability frameworks (e.g., CDP, EcoVadis, UNGC, CSRD readiness) within a single system.

On the product side, the LCA database and automated BOM mapping capabilities significantly simplified LCA modeling for complex products. Built-in datasets and transparent emission factors enabled detailed, auditable calculations aligned with customer requirements.

The combination of automation, database transparency, and system flexibility allowed LEONI to scale sustainability efforts without increasing headcount.

Results

LEONI achieved significant efficiency gains and improved data quality across both corporate and product-level sustainability processes.

  • Reduced emissions calculation and validation time for reporting from weeks to near-instant results
  • Reduced product carbon footprint modeling from 1 month to only days through automated mapping
  • Enabled broader Scope 3 coverage and more detailed upstream/downstream analysis
  • Improved data traceability and auditability, reducing risk from personnel changes
  • Allowed the same team to analyze more categories and datasets without increasing resources

These improvements have strengthened LEONI’s ability to respond to customer requirements, support decarbonization planning, and prepare for evolving regulatory demands.

“With Sphera, emissions calculations and product carbon footprint assessments are now delivered with a high level of transparency, consistency and scalability. Results are available significantly faster, enabling us to respond efficiently to increasing customer requirements and regulatory expectations. The improved visibility into our sustainability data also strengthens our ability to drive decarbonization initiatives across the organizations”
