The company moved off an on-premise environment that required ongoing IT maintenance and offered limited workflow control, while chemical teams also managed SDSs manually and sustainability teams tracked emissions and related data in spreadsheets.

With Sphera, Duke Energy centralized SDS management for roughly 60,000 SDSs, standardized incident and corrective action workflows and introduced governed structured sustainability processes for about 120 generating sites.

Solution

Duke Energy standardized Health and Safety Management, Chemical Management and Corporate Sustainability.

In HSM, the cloud deployment introduced incident, audit and corrective action workflows supported by integrated analytics, including enabling richer incident reporting through multiple consequence tracking. Automatically feed Power BI dashboards through APIs.

In Chemical Management, Sphera centralized SDS management, supplier updates and material approval workflows, helping reducing manual effort while improving consistency and control.

In Corporate Sustainability, Duke Energy introduced standardized data collection, validation and approval workflows supported by configurable templates, supporting documentation and API integrations, creating a more consistent and auditable approach to emissions and sustainability reporting.

Across all three areas, the focus was not on adding more software. It was on creating trusted data structure, stronger audit trails and a reusable operational reporting across the business.

Results

Duke Energy reduced chemical-management effort from four people to less than two FTE and eliminated the burden of maintaining the legacy on-premise environment. The company also reports a TRIR of 0.32 and leading rates compared with other large utility providers. On the sustainability side, standardized workflows improved data integrity, freed time for QA/QC and trend analysis and made it easier to answer ad hoc reporting requests with targeted views of data. Duke Energy now uses the same trusted data foundation to support Power BI visualizations and a shared carbon platform for large-account conversations [inferred].
