Republic Services, a leader in the environmental services industry, committed to advancing a circular economy, partnered with Sphera to conduct a cradle-to-gate product carbon footprint (PCF) study. The analysis focused on Republic Services’ recycled plastic product produced from materials collected from U.S. homes and businesses for use in sustainable packaging.
Many consumer packaged goods companies aim to increase their use of recycled content in packaging. Republic Services sought to support these goals while also helping CPGs to decarbonize their supply chains, substantiated by a critically reviewed, ISO-compliant study.
Sphera Consultants evaluated the greenhouse gas emissions associated with producing mechanically recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) flake at Republic Services’ Polymer Center in Las Vegas. The study results show the carbon footprint of Republic’s rPET flake is, on average, 54% lower than the representative rPET flake alternatives evaluated, and 82% lower than the virgin PET alternatives.
This assessment provides critical, verifiable data substantiating Republic Services’ rPET product helps customers meet their need for high-quality recycled materials while helping to decarbonize their supply chains.
