Sequestering CO2 from the atmosphere and storing it in agricultural soils is a much-discussed climate mitigation strategy. Various approaches for the quantification of soil organic carbon (SOC) already exist. However, evaluating the efficiency of methods to quantify carbon sequestration in agricultural soils is challenging, as there is no harmonization of methodologies or standards.  

To help the reader understand the current situation, the paper focuses on the intersection between scientific research and methodological application. It presents the key challenges to the development of methodologies and standards and explores the possibilities of integrating the quantification of SOC into the carbon footprint calculations of agricultural products.
