Sphera’s Government Services ensure compliance while improving safety and productivity.

CHICAGO, IL (April 8, 2021) – Sphera, a leading global provider of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) performance and risk management software, data and consulting services, announced today it has been awarded a $55 million contract to support hazardous material management for the U.S. Defense Logistics Agency (DLA). Sphera offers an integrated solution that gives visibility into the complex landscape of managing hazardous materials across the supply chain.

The DLA awarded the contract to Sphera after a panel of independent analysts determined the Sphera Hazardous Materials Management System (HMMS) solution for hazardous materials management is the only product of its kind to meet the DLA requirements for waste and material tracking.

HMMS ensures compliance with the rules and regulations for the safe handling and use of hazardous materials and hazardous waste, including transporting and tracking, warehousing (stocking, storing, issuing packaging and labeling), and disposing of hazardous materials and hazardous waste.

“HMMS exists not only to handle the U.S. government’s chemical and waste inventories needs but also to help ensure the safety of service members, contractors and civilians,” said Paul Marushka, Sphera’s president and CEO. “Sphera is proud to have been a trusted DLA partner for nearly 30 years and we look forward to continuing to provide the software and sustainment services that power a safer, more sustainable and productive mission.”

The DLA has also partnered with Sphera to implement new technologies under the program including:

  • Hazardous Materials Information Resource Management System (HMIRS) – The DLA’s central repository of Safety Data Sheet (SDS) information used by the DLA to supply SDS information on demand.
  • Smart Connect – An “inbound connector” that defines the standard for SDS data and automates SDS entry for many government agencies.
  • Performance Oriented Packaging (POP) – Provides access to packaging instructions and configurations to ensure the efficient and compliant shipment of hazardous materials.
  • Hazardous Waste Disposition (HWD) – Offers a worldwide network of hazardous waste management and disposal contracts, allowing environmental specialists and contracting representatives to administer high-quality contract solutions for hazardous waste disposal.

Sphera’s HMMS portfolio for government agencies has been developed in partnership with the user community.
