Overview

Endress+Hauser, a global leader in industrial process measurement and automation, faced increasing customer demands for reliable product carbon footprints (PCFs). To address this, Endress+Hauser partnered with Sphera’s Sustainability Consultants to develop a scalable, parameterized life cycle assessment (LCA) model tailored to their diverse product portfolio. To ensure consistent and accurate PCFs across multiple product centers, Sphera’s LCA for Experts and LCA Calculator software were implemented.

Given the varying product functions across centers, limited internal LCA capacity and diverse PCF requests from Endress+Hauser’s clients, establishing a unified LCA calculation methodology was essential.

Sphera’s experts guided Endress+Hauser through this complex process, striking the right balance between detail and efficiency. In a short timeframe, Endress+Hauser was equipped with a robust, flexible tool for PCF generation, enabling consistent reporting and laying a strong foundation for their long-term sustainability initiatives.

The partnership with Sphera empowered Endress+Hauser with the precision and scalability needed to meet evolving market expectations.

IN THIS CASE STUDY
HIGHLIGHTS

Achieved transparent and efficient emissions reporting for 70% of the portfolio across 5 product centers over 8 months.

Harmonized approach to LCA data collection and cradle-to-gate calculations.

Developed a scalable, four-level LCA model tailored to Endress+Hauser’s PCF reporting needs.

Provided guidance and support to establish effective carbon footprint management and an internal sustainability expert group.

Challenges

1

Consolidating company-wide data to enable efficient and accurate PCF reporting.

2

Aligning LCA modeling approach across the entire product portfolio to ensure consistency and reliability.

3

Developing a unified LCA model that accommodates inherent product differences and varying data quality.

4

Establishing a dedicated expert group of sustainability leaders to foster knowledge sharing and expertise.

Solution

To meet Endress+Hauser’s rapidly growing demand for PCFs, Sphera’s Sustainability Consultants designed a flexible, four-level LCA model:

  • Level 1 focused on material-level assessments, creating a consistent foundation for raw materials.
  • Level 2 captured part manufacturing at the supplier level, utilizing Sphera’s MLC database with the potential for future integration of supplier-specific data.
  • Level 3 detailed in-house module manufacturing, enabling product differentiation.
  • Level 4 provided an intuitive interface for full life cycle integration.

This structured approach, driven by Sphera’s advise and advanced LCA modelling capabilities, empowered Endress+Hauser to calculate product carbon footprints quickly and reliably. The parametric models allowed users to effortlessly transition between detailed modelling in the LCA for Experts software and simplified PCF reporting in the LCA Calculator, catering to varying levels of LCA maturity and expertise.

Results

By partnering with Sphera, Endress+Hauser successfully implemented transparent and efficient PCF reporting across 5 product centers, covering over 70% of their portfolio over 8 months. The flexible, four-level LCA model, developed by Sphera’s experts, enabled rapid scalability while maintaining consistency across a diverse product range. Additionally, a dedicated sustainability expert group was established and equipped with the tools and expertise to drive continuous advancements in PCF reporting. This strong foundation positions Endress+Hauser to seamlessly integrate PCF reporting with their future eco-design initiatives.

With Sphera’s guidance and support, we successfully harmonized our LCA data collection and models to generate carbon footprints for most of our product portfolio. The product carbon footprint (PCF) reporting tool, developed by Sphera and applicable to all product centers, is based on a single LCA model that harmonizes product differences, BOM structures and data quality. This approach is both time- and cost-efficient for our experts, supporting our long-term sustainability strategy.
