Leading global firm committed to helping companies meet their ESG goals shares a transparent account of its own performance across all three ESG pillars

CHICAGO, IL (September 29, 2023) – Sphera®, a leading global provider of environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance and risk management software, data and consulting services, has published its 2022 ESG Report. The report provides a transparent account of Sphera’s ESG performance and reflects the steps the company has taken to operationalize ESG and to support organizations worldwide that seek to do the same.

Sphera’s own ESG and sustainability performance is vital to its mission of creating a safer, more sustainable and productive world. Sphera is committed to supporting businesses in setting their ESG and sustainability goals and measuring and reporting their progress, and also to minimizing its own environmental impact, elevating its productivity and enhancing safety in its operations.

“With evolving regulatory requirements and investor and consumer demand for greater transparency in corporate environmental performance, businesses around the world need to measure and report their impact, efforts and progress,” said Paul Marushka, Sphera’s CEO and president. “As such, we recognize the importance of supporting customers in their ESG journeys while also delivering on our own ESG commitments. Our 2022 ESG Report demonstrates our efforts in minimizing our environmental impact, creating an inclusive and collaborative work environment and adhering to robust corporate and operational governance mechanisms that foster transparency.”

At the beginning of 2022, Sphera undertook a materiality assessment aimed at identifying, understanding and prioritizing ESG topics according to what its stakeholders view as critical to Sphera. The ESG Report provides a look at Sphera’s performance in those areas.

Environmental

Companies around the world are driving initiatives to accelerate their sustainability efforts. Investors, customers and employees want more transparent reporting from businesses on their plans for adaptation as well as their impact on the environment. As a leading provider of ESG performance solutions, Sphera is committed to helping customers reduce their environmental impact and to reducing its own carbon footprint. Some strides Sphera has made in the environmental pillar include:

  • A 19% reduction in GHG emissions, which was measured using 2019 as the baseline year.
  • An increase in its reliance on renewable energy for its electricity needs. Renewable sources provided 22% of Sphera’s electricity in 2022, marking an increase over 2019 levels.
  • 100% attainment of the Blackstone Emissions Reduction target, which seeks to reduce emissions by 15% across Scope 1 and 2 within the first three years after acquisition.

Social

Sphera’s employees are the driving force behind the company’s mission. Sphera strives to create a collaborative, inclusive work environment in which employees feel valued, are empowered to excel and are rewarded. By providing internal recognition, training and development opportunities, Sphera equips its employees with tools and resources that help them grow within the organization and contribute to solving challenges around them. Results of those efforts under the social pillar include:

  • More than 9 hours of required training logged per FTE.
  • 20 awards given to colleagues for demonstrating Sphera’s core values.
  • Continued support of Colleague Resource Groups (CRGs) in their efforts to provide employees with opportunities to network, collaborate and discuss issues that matter to them. The three CRGs are Women Excel, Grow, Empower, Transform (WEGET), Well-Being and Black Employee Solidarity Team (BEST).

Governance

Good governance is the cornerstone of any strong business, and Sphera has built robust corporate and operational governance mechanisms that go beyond compliance to prioritize product and service excellence; market-leading research, innovation and thought leadership; and customer satisfaction. Some notable achievements in the governance pillar are:

  • Hosted 30 webinars and attended 51 tradeshows.
  • 9 awards received for services and products.
  • Achievement of the SOC2 Type 2 attestation.

As part of its ongoing commitment to sustainability, Sphera has joined a number of initiatives designed to help companies work toward mitigating climate change. Sphera committed to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) in 2020 and did substantial work in 2022 in order to submit its targets for validation in 2023. Additionally, the company reports in reference to the standards of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB) and the U.N. Global Compact (UNGC) and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
