Sphera’s new LCA Automation for Discrete Manufacturing solution will reduce the time it takes to complete an enterprise-wide LCA analysis from months to minutes

CHICAGO, IL (March 2, 2023) – Sphera®, a leading global provider of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) performance and risk management software, data and consulting services, today announced the launch of its Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) Automation for Discrete Manufacturing.

The newest iteration of Sphera’s next-generation LCA Automation solution will enable discrete manufacturers to perform reliable LCAs at scale across their entire product portfolio in a condensed timeframe by automatically importing primary product data based on the Bill of Materials (BOM) to calculate emissions. The overarching goal of LCA Automation is to help businesses—especially those in sectors with complex products—to more effectively reduce their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions at every step of production.

Discrete manufacturing involves assembling numerous parts or components in a factory to make a finished product—automotive, aerospace and furniture, for example. And all of the materials used to make those parts, the modes of transportation by which they travel to the factory and the method by which they are delivered to market need to be taken into account to provide a complete view of a product’s life cycle.

Product-level emissions tracking and reporting is becoming an increasingly important tool for businesses. Automating the creation of LCAs, product carbon footprints (PCFs) and environmental product declarations (EPDs) across a discrete manufacturers’ entire portfolio in hours allows teams to proactively predict and control environmental impact. Providing companies with the ability to analyze their Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions at the product level helps reduce the risk of shifting the environmental burden from one resource to another.

“With a spotlight on sustainability, and ever-increasing emergence of regulations around the world, comes increased pressure for companies to provide transparency into the environmental profile of their full product portfolio,” said Mike Zamis, Sphera’s chief product officer. “LCA Automation for Discrete Manufacturing allows businesses with complex products to perform LCAs quickly and at scale. Enabling companies to more effectively reduce their GHG emissions and make holistic corporate decisions is critical to our mission of creating a safer, more sustainable and productive world.”
