Apache Corp. was originally founded in 1954, but it was a 1988 decision to pursue a global strategy that led to its rapid expansion. It closed a series of acquisitions, beginning in 1992, and by 2012 Apache had become one of the world’s top independent Oil & Gas exploration and production companies with operations in the United States, Canada, the North Sea, Egypt, Australia & Argentina.
Apache went live with a single SAP instance in 2008 with a focus on master data that was too little and too late. Cleansing was ineffective because a lack of standards and governance did not exist. By 2010, poor data quality had created significant inventory management, reporting and sourcing issues, and users were becoming increasingly dissatisfied. PWC was contracted to assess the situation, and its recommendations included the establishment of a global governance program and recleaning the material master data to a global standard and implementation of Master Data Management (MDM) solution. The Apache team selected to reclean the material data and implement an MDM solution using Sphera’s MRO solutions.
