Not a day goes by when an Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG)-related topic isn’t prominent in the news, and some of it so eye-opening that it truly cannot be ignored.

For example, you probably heard last month how U.N. Secretary General António Guterres called the findings of the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) assessment report a “ ‘Code Red’ for humanity.”

And with net zero and other ESG-related topics on the agenda of the upcoming U.N. Climate Change Conference (COP 26), sustainability issues will continue to make headline news.

As a global community, there’s a lot of work that must be done to get to where we want to be.

With that backdrop in mind, we launched our first Sphera Sustainability survey earlier this year, and we released the findings today. The report explores where companies are positioned in their ESG and sustainability journeys in the face of massive economic and climatic changes. Are they invested in the future of the planet while still building resilient businesses? Do they know how to overcome the many challenges of becoming an ESG-driven company that meets stakeholder expectations?

There are several surprising findings in the report, but one that caught my attention in particular was that companies are committed to sustainability, but, even so, only 1 out 5 companies say they have implemented a strategy into their core business plan. This does not bode well for overall ESG performance.

Businesses have largely been left to their own devices to establish and measure their sustainability performance, which has ultimately disincentivized action.

It doesn’t have to be that way. Sphera helps companies each and every day make real and meaningful changes in their sustainability efforts, which benefits them and the communities in which they operate.

The days when companies struggled to make a business case for sustainability are over. Organizations large and small are seeing the benefits of both carbon management and building sustainability into their everyday processes throughout their supply chains. Sphera’s data, software and expertise can help companies get to where they need to be and move them from just staying in compliance to becoming real leaders in terms of ESG initiatives.
