Leading global ESG firm taps David Batchelor to helm board during period of accelerated growth

CHICAGO, IL (June 7, 2022) – Sphera®, a leading global provider of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) performance and risk management software, data and consulting services, today announced the appointment of David Batchelor as chairman of the board of directors.

Batchelor has extensive international executive experience across his 40-year career in risk, insurance and capital markets. He previously spent nearly two decades with global risk advisory firm Marsh, including serving as the organization’s vice chairman. In addition to his role as Sphera’s chairman, Batchelor currently serves as non-executive chairman with Talbot Underwriting at Lloyd’s of London. He is also an advisor to private equity and venture capital funds.

Batchelor has specific expertise in ESG, sustainability and climate risk management and advancing diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs. He is committed to raising transparency through board engagement on ESG and is an alumni of the UC Berkeley program ESG: Navigating the Board’s Role. At Marsh, Batchelor led the group on emerging sustainability risks associated with climate change. He currently mentors female entrepreneurs through the Cherie Blair Foundation for Women in the U.K. and previously sponsored the Asia Resource Group at Marsh.

“David has been at the forefront of ESG initiatives, and I welcome him to our board of directors,” said Paul Marushka, Sphera’s CEO and president. “David’s extensive global executive experience and deep understanding of all aspects of risk management will assist Sphera as it continues its growth trajectory across geographies and markets. Enabling companies to make informed, data-based decisions to mitigate risk and achieve their sustainability goals is central to advancing our mission of creating a safer, more sustainable and productive world.”

Added Batchelor, “It’s an exciting time to be heading up the board as Sphera continues to bring innovative ESG solutions to market to help companies on their path to net zero. It’s also a pivotal time, with investors, stakeholders and regulators alike casting a more discerning eye toward ESG and sustainability reporting. I look forward to guiding the effort to help Sphera’s customers meet and exceed their own sustainability goals—while ensuring that we set and maintain the global gold standard ourselves.”

Batchelor’s appointment represents the latest in Sphera’s efforts to grow its ESG measurement and reporting solutions. In 2021, global investment firm Blackstone completed its investment in Sphera in a transaction that valued the company at $1.4 billion. As a result, Sphera has been able to innovate its offerings and pursue further strategic partnerships to help advance its efforts to make ESG reporting more standardized and transparent to investors and businesses alike.
